Complete Guide to Ideal Weight
What is Ideal Weight?
Ideal weight is a healthy weight range determined by your height and biological sex. There's no single magic number — different medical formulas offer different approximations, and our calculator shows you all of them for a complete picture.
Formulas Used
Devine Formula (1974)
Men: 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches - 60) Women: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches - 60)
The most widely used formula in clinical and pharmacological practice.
Robinson Formula (1983)
Developed as an improvement to Devine's formula, with more conservative coefficients.
Miller Formula (1983)
Similar to Devine but produces slightly different ranges, especially for taller individuals.
Hamwi Formula (1964)
One of the first published formulas, still widely used in clinical nutrition.
Healthy BMI Range
In addition to individual formulas, we calculate the healthy weight range based on BMI:
Minimum weight = 18.5 × (height in meters)² Maximum weight = 24.9 × (height in meters)²
Limitations
These formulas are approximations and don't consider:
- Muscle mass: Athletes may weigh more without being overweight
- Bone structure: Larger-framed people will have a higher healthy weight
- Age: Ranges vary with age
- Body composition: Fat-to-muscle ratio matters more than the number on the scale
These calculators are informational tools. For personalized assessment of your healthy weight, consult a doctor or nutritionist.
No single formula is definitively best. Devine's is most used clinically. We recommend considering the average of all formulas and the BMI range as reference.
