Ideal Weight

What is Ideal Weight?

Ideal weight is a healthy weight range determined by your height and biological sex. There is no single magic number: different medical formulas offer different approximations, and our calculator shows them all so you get a complete picture.

Quick answer (calculator defaults)

For a 175 cm person, the healthy BMI range is approximately 56.6-76.3 kg. The classic formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) give values between 65 and 72 kg for men and between 59 and 66 kg for women.

Formulas Used

Devine Formula (1974)

Devine

Men: 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60) Women: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)

It is the most used formula in clinical and pharmacological practice.

Robinson Formula (1983)

Developed as an improvement to the Devine formula, with more conservative coefficients.

Miller Formula (1983)

Similar to Devine but produces slightly different ranges, especially for taller people.

Hamwi Formula (1964)

One of the first published formulas, still widely used in clinical nutrition.

Healthy BMI Range

In addition to individual formulas, we calculate the healthy weight range according to BMI (Body Mass Index):

Healthy BMI Range

Minimum weight = 18.5 × (height in meters)² Maximum weight = 24.9 × (height in meters)²

Step-by-step example (1.75 m)

  1. Height in meters = 1.75 m
  2. Minimum weight = 18.5 × 1.75² = 18.5 × 3.0625 = 56.6 kg
  3. Maximum weight = 24.9 × 1.75² = 76.3 kg
  4. Healthy range = 56.6-76.3 kg

Reference table by height (healthy BMI)

| Height | Minimum weight | Maximum weight | |---|---|---| | 160 cm | 47.4 kg | 63.7 kg | | 170 cm | 53.5 kg | 72.0 kg | | 175 cm | 56.6 kg | 76.3 kg | | 180 cm | 59.9 kg | 80.7 kg | | 190 cm | 66.8 kg | 89.9 kg |

How to read the result

Ideal weight is not a single number: it is a range. Classic formulas serve as clinical references, while the BMI range defines the healthy zone. If your weight is outside the range, small sustained changes (balanced diet plus exercise) usually suffice; what matters is the trend, not a single-day figure.

Limits

These formulas do not consider body composition: a very muscular person can weigh more than "ideal" with excellent health. Ideal weight is an educational guide, not a diagnosis. Consult a health professional.

Frequently asked questions

No: there is a healthy range (BMI 18.5-24.9) and several clinical formulas that give different reference values. The calculator shows them all for comparison.

The Devine formula is the most used in clinical and pharmacological practice. Hamwi is common in clinical nutrition. All give similar values for average heights.

No. The formulas assume average body composition; muscular athletes can exceed the range with excellent health. Body fat is a better measure for them.

It depends on how far and your body composition. The BMI range is a screening guide: if in doubt, consult a doctor or nutritionist for a full assessment.
