Savings goal calculator
A savings goal is a target amount plus a deadline: emergency fund, down payment, trip, or 3–6 months of expenses. This tool estimates how much to set aside each month, including money you already have and an optional annual interest rate (monthly compounding).
With goal 10,000, current savings 0, horizon 5 years, and rate 4% annual:
- Required monthly savings: 150.83
- Weekly ≈ 34.83 · daily ≈ 5.03
- Total contributions: 9,049.91
- Interest earned: 950.09
At 0% interest the same timeline needs 166.67/month (total 10,000). The 4% rate saves about 15.84 per month out of pocket.
What this tool calculates
- Monthly / weekly / daily contribution to reach the goal on time
- Effect of current savings that also compound
- Interest vs total cash contributed by the end date
- Educational scenarios (not personalized financial advice)
Currency is a label only: use GTQ, USD, or any unit; the math is identical.
Formula (ordinary annuity)
PMT = (Goal − Current × (1 + r)^n) × r / ((1 + r)^n − 1)
where: r = annual rate / 100 / 12 n = years × 12 If r = 0 → PMT = (Goal − Current) / n
Payments are assumed at the end of each month (ordinary annuity), matching the calculator engine.
Step-by-step example (defaults)
- Goal = 10,000 · Current = 0 · Years = 5 · Rate = 4%
- n = 60 months · r = 0.04/12 ≈ 0.003333
- Amount funded by deposits = 10,000
- PMT = 10,000 × r / ((1+r)^60 − 1) ≈ 150.83
- Total contributions ≈ 150.83 × 60 = 9,049.91 · Interest ≈ 950.09
If you already have 2,000 at 4% for 5 years, the engine grows that balance first and the required deposit falls to 114.00/month (total interest ≈ 1,160.07).

How to use it in practice
- Set the goal in today’s currency (down payment, trip, 3–6 months of costs).
- Add what you already saved.
- Pick a realistic horizon (1–10 years is common).
- Use a conservative rate (0–6% for cash-like accounts).
- Cross-check the deposit against your savings ceiling in the monthly budget or 50/30/20 rule.
- To project growth of a fixed contribution stream, also try compound interest.
Many households target 3–6 months of fixed costs. Example: need 6,000 in 12 months at 0% → 500/month. If you earn a small yield, the required deposit drops; if the date is fixed, prioritize the timeline over the rate.
FAQ
It solves for the periodic deposit (monthly, with weekly/daily equivalents) needed to hit a target amount in a given number of years, with optional starting balance and an annual rate compounded monthly.
They are a neutral worked example: five-figure goal, medium horizon, moderate rate. The engine returns 150.83/month. Swap in your currency and real account rate.
Current savings grow at the same rate; you only fund the gap. Example: goal 10,000, current 2,000, 5 years, 4% → 114.00/month.
No. At 0% the math is (goal − current) / months: useful for short timelines or when you do not want to assume yield.
No. Results are nominal. Over long horizons inflation reduces purchasing power: raise the goal or confirm with an advisor.
Yes: set the goal to 3–6 months of expenses and a 6–24 month timeline. Pair with the monthly budget so the deposit fits your savings share.
Here the question is “how much must I deposit to reach X?”. The compound interest calculator starts from principal + fixed deposits and projects the ending balance.
