How much arrives in Guatemala: net quetzales, fees, and effective exchange rate
When you send money to Guatemala, what matters is how many quetzales your family receives after every charge, not the exchange rate the service advertises.
With four inputs (amount in dollars, offered exchange rate, sender fee, and local charge in Guatemala) the calculator gives you the net amount that arrives, the gross conversion, total fees, the effective exchange rate, and the percentage cost of the remittance.
- Calculate the net quetzales your family receives.
- Separate the sending fee, local charge, and exchange-rate margin.
- Compare services using the effective exchange rate.
Worked example: sending $300 to Guatemala
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Amount sent | $300.00 |
| Service exchange rate | Q7.60 per USD |
| Sender fee | $5.00 |
| Local fee in Guatemala | Q10.00 |
| Gross conversion (300 × 7.60) | Q2,280.00 |
| Recipient receives ((300 − 5) × 7.60 − 10) | Q2,232.00 |
| Total fees (Q38.00 + Q10.00) | Q48.00 |
| Effective exchange rate (2,232 ÷ 300) | Q7.44 per USD |
| Cost over the remittance | ≈ 2.1% |

Advertised rate vs effective exchange rate
The advertised rate is the one shown in the service’s marketing. The effective rate is what you actually got: the net quetzales that arrived divided by the dollars you sent, with fees already deducted.
A service can offer an attractive exchange rate and charge high fees, or the other way around. The fair comparison is always the net amount that arrives and the effective rate, never the advertised rate on its own.
As a neutral reference, the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat) publishes the daily reference exchange rate at banguat.gob.gt. The gap between that reference and the rate you are offered is the service’s exchange-rate margin.
How to compare 2 or 3 sending services
With the same dollar amount, repeat the calculation for each service you are considering:
- Note each service’s exchange rate and every fee (sending fee and local charge).
- Calculate how much arrives in Guatemala with each one using the same dollars sent.
- Pick the one delivering the most net quetzales; the effective rate confirms the decision.
