401(k) RMD 2026

The IRS requires minimum distributions from a 401(k) beginning the year you turn 73. The amount is last year’s December 31 balance divided by the Uniform Lifetime Table factor (Pub 590-B Table III).

RMD

RMD = prior-year-end balance ÷ Uniform Lifetime divisor

At age 73 the divisor is 26.5. Example: $265,000 ÷ 26.5 = $10,000.

Age 72 is not required. Roth 401(k) RMDs while the owner is alive were repealed for designated Roth accounts; this tool is for traditional balances.
