If you work on Sunday in Mexico, the Federal Labor Law grants a Sunday premium of at least 25% of your ordinary daily wage (article 71 LFT). This page calculates that minimum: monthly salary ÷ 30 × 25% × Sundays worked.
With a monthly salary of MXN 12,000 and 1 Sunday worked: daily wage MXN 400 (12,000 ÷ 30) → Sunday premium MXN 100 (400 × 25%). With 4 Sundays: MXN 400.
How is the Sunday premium calculated in Mexico?
Article 71 of the Federal Labor Law (LFT) states that workers who provide services on Sunday are entitled to an additional premium of at least 25% over the wages of ordinary working days. The calculation has two steps:
- Daily wage: the monthly salary is divided by 30 (article 89 LFT).
- Premium per Sunday: the daily wage is multiplied by 25% (article 71 LFT).
daily wage = monthly salary ÷ 30
premium per Sunday = daily wage × 0.25
monthly premium = premium per Sunday × Sundays worked
Worked examples
Example 1: MXN 12,000 a month and 4 Sundays
| Item | Calculation | Amount | |---|---|---| | Daily wage | 12,000 ÷ 30 | MXN 400 | | Premium per Sunday | 400 × 25% | MXN 100 | | Monthly premium (4 Sundays) | 100 × 4 | MXN 400 |
Premium table by monthly salary
| Monthly salary | Daily wage | Premium per Sunday | Premium × 2 Sundays | Premium × 4 Sundays | |---|---:|---:|---:|---:| | MXN 8,000 | 266.67 | 66.67 | 133.33 | 266.67 | | MXN 12,000 | 400.00 | 100.00 | 200.00 | 400.00 | | MXN 15,000 | 500.00 | 125.00 | 250.00 | 500.00 | | MXN 20,000 | 666.67 | 166.67 | 333.33 | 666.67 | | MXN 30,000 | 1,000.00 | 250.00 | 500.00 | 1,000.00 |
Every row uses the same formula: monthly ÷ 30 × 25% × Sundays worked. The calculator accepts 1 to 5 Sundays per month.
What is included and what is not?
The Sunday premium is in addition to the wages you already earn for working that day. This calculator estimates only the 25% extra:
| Included | Not included | |---|---| | Minimum premium under art. 71 (25%) | Work on a mandatory rest day (art. 73: double pay) | | Fixed ordinary monthly salary | Holidays and their surcharges | | Sundays worked (1 to 5) | Overtime (arts. 66 and 68) | | Monthly salary conventions | ISR, IMSS, and other withholdings | | — | Higher benefits agreed in a contract or collective agreement |
If your employment contract or collective bargaining agreement grants a premium above 25%, the higher figure applies. 25% is the legal floor, not the ceiling.
This calculator is an educational tool, not labor or tax advice. For your specific case (commissions, variable pay, rest day on another weekday, agreements), check with your employer, an accountant, or PROFEDET.
Sunday premium vs. rest-day work vs. overtime
Three different payments are often confused:
| Concept | Legal basis | What it pays | |---|---|---| | Sunday premium | Art. 71 LFT | +25% of the daily wage for each Sunday worked | | Working a mandatory rest day | Art. 73 LFT | Double pay (200%) if you work your mandatory weekly rest day | | Overtime | Arts. 66 and 68 LFT | +100% over the ordinary hourly wage (up to 9 extra hours per week) |
The Sunday premium applies even if your weekly rest day is another day of the week: if you work on Sunday, you earn the extra 25% for that day on top of the ordinary payment.
Frequently asked questions
This tool estimates only the premium (the extra 25%). The wages for working the Sunday itself are separate.
No. Overtime follows articles 66 and 68. The Sunday premium is article 71.
If you work on your mandatory weekly rest day, the payment corresponds to article 73 LFT (double pay), a different legal scenario from the 25% under article 71.
