Mexico vacation pay and prima vacacional calculator

Paid vacation in Mexico is regulated by the Federal Labor Law (LFT). Under the vacaciones dignas reform (LFT article 76, in force since January 1, 2023), workers with more than one year of service enjoy an annual paid vacation period that starts at 12 days and grows with years of service. The prima vacacional (LFT article 80) is 25% of the vacation pay.

Quick answer

With $10,000 MXN a month and 1 year of service: daily pay $333.33, 12 vacation days, pay of $4,000.00 and a 25% prima of $1,000.00. Total: $5,000.00.

How many vacation days do I get?

The statutory days table (LFT article 76, 2023 reform) is:

| Years of service | Vacation days | |---:|---:| | 1 | 12 | | 2 | 14 | | 3 | 16 | | 4 | 18 | | 5 | 20 | | 6 to 10 | 22 | | 11 to 15 | 24 | | 16 to 20 | 26 | | 21 to 25 | 28 | | 26 to 30 | 30 | | 31 to 35 | 32 | | 36 to 40 | 34 |

The rule: 12 days in year one, +2 days per year up to 20, then, from the sixth year, +2 days every five years of service.

How are vacation pay and prima vacacional calculated?

The daily pay in this calculator uses a fixed-monthly-salary convention: monthly salary ÷ 30 (LFT article 89 divides weekly/monthly wages by 7/30 to get daily pay).

Daily pay

Daily pay = Monthly salary ÷ 30

Vacation pay

Vacation pay = Daily pay × Statutory days

Prima vacacional (25%)

Prima vacacional = Vacation pay × 25%

Total

Total = Vacation pay + Prima vacacional

Each year, at least 12 vacation days are continuous (LFT article 78); the rest of the period can be scheduled as arranged.

Examples

Example with $15,000 a month and 1 year

| Item | Calculation | Amount | |---|---|---| | Daily pay | 15,000 ÷ 30 | $500.00 | | Vacation days | 12 | 12 | | Vacation pay | 500 × 12 | $6,000.00 | | Prima vacacional (25%) | 6,000 × 25% | $1,500.00 | | Total | 6,000 + 1,500 | $7,500.00 |

Example with $10,000 a month and 6 years

| Item | Calculation | Amount | |---|---|---| | Daily pay | 10,000 ÷ 30 | ≈$333.33 | | Vacation days | 22 | 22 | | Vacation pay | (10,000 ÷ 30) × 22 | ≈$7,333.33 | | Prima vacacional (25%) | 7,333.33 × 25% | ≈$1,833.33 | | Total | 7,333.33 + 1,833.33 | $9,166.66 |

Yes. The LFT (article 80) sets a bonus of no less than 25% of the pay for the vacation period.

It depends on your years of service: 12 days in year one, increasing by 2 days per year up to 20, then +2 days every 5 years from the sixth year (LFT article 76, 2023 vacaciones dignas reform).

Yes. At least 12 days must be continuous (LFT article 78); the rest of the period can be scheduled as convenient, by mutual agreement.

When the employment relationship ends, unused vacation or its proportional part is settled within the final pay (finiquito). This calculator does not compute that proportion.
