Mexico overtime calculator (horas extras) 2026

Overtime ("horas extra") is time worked beyond your ordinary shift. Under the reform published in Mexico's DOF on May 1, 2026 (decree 5786537), overtime is paid as follows:

  • The first 9 overtime hours per week are paid at double time (art. 66 and transitory provision 4).
  • Up to 4 additional hours per week are paid at triple time (art. 68).
  • The legal cap is 13 overtime hours weekly. Beyond that there is no pay rate — the law forbids it except in exceptional cases.
Quick answer

With a monthly salary of MXN $12,000 on a day shift, your ordinary hour is worth $50 ((12,000 ÷ 30) ÷ 8). For 12 overtime hours a week: 9 × $50 × 2 = $900 double + 3 × $50 × 3 = $450 triple = $1,350.

How overtime pay is calculated

First the daily wage: monthly salary ÷ 30 (LFT art. 89). Then the ordinary hour rate: daily wage ÷ shift hours (art. 61):

Pay = min(extras, 9) × hour × 2 + min(max(extras − 9, 0), 4) × hour × 3

Is the standard workweek already 40 hours?

No. In 2026 the ordinary week is 48 hours (transitory provision 2); the step-down to 40 hours phases in gradually through 2030. This calculator applies the rules in force in 2026.

Legal distribution of overtime

Under articles 66 and 68, overtime may be spread over up to 4 hours per day on at most 4 days per week, and total work time (ordinary + extra) may not exceed 12 hours per day.

Monthly salary MXN $12,000, day shift → daily wage $400, hour rate $50:

At 14 or more hours, anything beyond 13 is not priced here at any rate: the tool warns you because it exceeds the legal cap.

At double (100% extra), under reformed LFT article 66. Time-and-a-half belongs to other jurisdictions; it does not apply to Mexican overtime.

The LFT does not allow exceeding that cap except in exceptional cases (for example, an emergency). This calculator invents no extra rates: it shows a warning and leaves those hours out of the pay.

It depends on your regular schedule. The calculator uses 8 hours for day, 7 for night and 7.5 for mixed shifts (art. 61). You pick the type; the tool does not classify shifts automatically.
