1099 Take-Home Calculator 2026 (US)

A W-2 paycheck has an employer matching half of FICA. A 1099 / Schedule C filer pays both halves as self-employment tax (SECA), then files Form 1040 for income tax. This calculator runs both in one pass:

  • SECA: 12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare on 92.35% of net earnings (IRS Topic 554). Social Security stops at the $184,500 2026 wage base.
  • ½ of SE tax is deductible above the line (IRC § 164(f)).
  • 2026 standard deduction (Rev. Proc. 2025-32): $16,100 single / $32,200 MFJ / $24,150 HoH.
  • Form 1040 §1 rate tables for 2026 — not the Pub 15-T withholding tables.
1099 take-home (year)

SECA = 12.4% × min(0.9235 × net, remaining SS wage base) + 2.9% × (0.9235 × net)

AGI = net − ½ SECA taxable = max(0, AGI − standard deduction) income tax = Form 1040 §1 lookup (Rev. Proc. 2025-32) take-home = net − SECA − income tax

Worked example

Single, $50,000 Schedule C net profit, no W-2 wages:

  • SECA: $7,064.78 (IRS Topic 554 golden case)
  • ½ SE deductible: $3,532.39 → AGI $46,467.61
  • Taxable: $46,467.61 − $16,100 = $30,367.61
  • Income tax: $1,240 + 12% × $17,967.61 = $3,396.11
  • Take-home: $39,539.11 — about 79.1% of net profit. Quarterly estimate: $2,615.22

This estimate excludes QBI (§199A), Additional Medicare Tax 0.9%, NIIT 3.8%, credits, estimated-tax penalties, retirement contributions, and all state or local tax. Educational estimate from IRS Topic 554, IRC § 164(f), and Rev. Proc. 2025-32; not tax advice.

Related tools (United States):

FICA is what an employer withholds from a W-2 (6.2% + 1.45% employee share, plus the employer match). SECA is what a self-employed person pays alone: 12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare on 92.35% of net earnings. Half of the SE tax is deductible on Form 1040.

W-2 withholding uses the Pub 15-T percentage-method tables. A self-employed person files Form 1040, which uses the § 1 rate tables from Rev. Proc. 2025-32. They are different numbers on purpose.

QBI (§199A), Additional Medicare Tax 0.9%, NIIT, credits, estimated-tax penalties, and state or local tax. It is an educational estimate, not tax advice.
