How to Calculate Guatemala VAT Input Credit (IVA crédito fiscal) 2026

If you buy goods or services on a valid Guatemalan invoice, the 12% IVA you pay is not always a pure cost: under the general VAT regime it can become input tax credit (crédito fiscal). The practical question is: how do you extract the IVA crédito fiscal from a total that already includes tax?

Quick answer: when the invoice total includes 12% VAT:

Input credit = total with VAT ÷ 1.12 × 0.12

(same as: total − total ÷ 1.12). Example: Q1,120 total → Q1,000 net base → Q120 input credit. Want it instantly? Open the Guatemala VAT calculator (add or remove 12%).

What input credit is (and is not)

Under Guatemala’s general VAT framework (Decree 27-92 and reforms):

  • Output VAT (débito fiscal): the 12% you charge on taxable sales.
  • Input VAT credit (crédito fiscal): the 12% charged on qualifying, documented purchases when the law lets you credit it.
  • VAT due (period): output VAT − input credit (when output is higher).

Input credit is not the same as VAT withholding at source. Withholding changes what hits your bank account on payment day; input credit is used when you settle VAT for the period. For invoice net pay after withholdings, use the ISR & IVA withholding calculator.

This guide is informational. The right to credit depends on your regime (general vs small taxpayer), the purchase type, documentation, and current SAT rules. Confirm with your accountant or the SAT portal before filing.

Formula: extract 12% VAT from a tax-inclusive total

When you only know the gross total:

Net base (ex-VAT) = Total ÷ 1.12
Input credit (12%) = Total − Net base
                    = Total × (0.12 / 1.12)
                    = Total ÷ 1.12 × 0.12

Classic mistake: multiply the total by 12% (Total × 0.12). That overstates VAT. On Q1,120, 12% of the total is Q134.40; the real VAT is Q120.

From a net amount:

Input credit = Net × 0.12
Invoice total = Net × 1.12

Quick table: gross total → base → input credit (12%)

Monthly example: output, input, and VAT due

Assume a general-regime business:

  1. Monthly sales (net, ex-VAT): Q50,000
    • Output VAT = 50,000 × 12% = Q6,000
  2. Taxable purchases (gross invoice totals with VAT): Q22,400
    • Base = 22,400 ÷ 1.12 = Q20,000
    • Input credit = Q2,400
  3. Estimated VAT due = 6,000 − 2,400 = Q3,600
ItemAmount
Net salesQ50,000
Output VAT (12%)Q6,000
Purchases with VAT (gross)Q22,400
Input creditQ2,400
Estimated VAT dueQ3,600

If input credit exceeds output VAT, any credit balance follows period rules — do not assume an automatic cash refund. Reconcile every invoice with your accountant.

Input credit vs withholding (do not mix them)

Cash example (not input credit): net Q10,000 + VAT Q1,200 = invoice Q11,200; with educational defaults ISR 5% and 15% VAT withholding, net pay is about Q10,520. See the invoice withholdings guide.

Costly mistakes when “pulling” the credit

  1. Subtracting 12% from the total instead of dividing by 1.12.
  2. Crediting purchases without a valid invoice or outside what your regime allows.
  3. Mixing small-taxpayer rules with the general regime — check Guatemala small taxpayer.
  4. Treating input credit as the client’s bank deposit — different cash-flow moments.
  5. Copying another country’s rate — Guatemala’s general reference rate is 12%.

FAQ

How do I calculate IVA crédito fiscal from a tax-inclusive total?

Divide the total by 1.12 for the net base, then subtract from the total. Or multiply the total by 0.12 / 1.12.

Is the credit simply 12% of what I paid?

Only if you correctly separate the net base. Applying 12% to the gross total overstates the tax.

Can every purchase generate input credit?

No. It depends on taxable status, documentation, and your regime. Exempt or poorly documented buys often generate no credit.

Do output and input VAT net against each other?

In a typical general-regime period settlement, yes in substance: output − input. The result is VAT due (or a balance under applicable rules).

Does this replace Declaraguate or the Virtual Agency?

No. This is educational arithmetic for the 12% rate. Official filing runs through SAT channels.
