Resignation vs dismissal: how much does the total change?
When a job ends in Guatemala, the package is not the same if you resign or if there is unjust dismissal. The large gap is usually severance (indemnización) (about 1 month of salary per year worked in this calculator's educational model).
On voluntary resignation, severance usually does not apply; proportional benefits (aguinaldo, bono 14) and unused vacation still might. On unjust dismissal, the same model adds severance. Use your salary, dates, and unused vacation days above.
This comparison helps you decide. Once you know your termination type, calculate the full amount (with prior notice and pending salaries) in the Guatemala settlement calculator.
What this tool compares
| Item | Resignation (model) | Unjust dismissal (model) | |---|---|---| | Severance (indemnización) | No | Yes (about 1 month × years) | | Proportional Christmas bonus (aguinaldo) | Yes | Yes | | Proportional Bono 14 | Yes | Yes | | Unused vacation | Yes (days you enter) | Yes |
The difference between totals is almost always severance. Confirm with HR, the Ministry of Labor, or labor counsel for constructive dismissal, mutual agreement, or other exit types.
How to use it
- Enter your monthly salary in quetzales.
- Hire start and exit dates.
- Unused vacation days (ask HR if unsure).
- Compare both totals and the breakdown.
Severance (dismissal) ≈ monthly salary × (days worked ÷ 365)
Aguinaldo and Bono 14 ≈ (salary ÷ 12) × months in the matching period
Unused vacation ≈ (salary ÷ 30) × days remaining
Simple example
Salary Q6,000 · exactly 2 years · 0 vacation days · mid-year exit (illustrative):
- Resignation: proportional benefits only (no severance).
- Dismissal: the same plus about Q12,000 severance reference (2 × Q6,000).
Exact amounts depend on dates and benefit periods.

FAQ
Under the usual voluntary-resignation model, no. Still check proportional aguinaldo, bono 14, and unused vacation.
In this calculator, yes: both scenarios share benefits and only dismissal adds severance. Real cases may include other items or settlements.
Do not assume the same package. Justified dismissal has different rules: confirm the legal ground with counsel.
