How to calculate net salary in Guatemala 2026 (IGSS + ISR)
Negotiating “Q8,000” is not the same as receiving Q8,000. Net salary subtracts IGSS and ISR (when it applies). This guide walks through the steps so you can compare offers honestly.

Step 1: start from gross
Gross is the contracted monthly amount before ordinary deductions. Do not use last payday’s deposit if it included one-off bonuses or unusual withholdings.
Step 2: subtract employee IGSS (4.83%)
IGSS = Gross salary × 0.0483
Example: Q10,000 × 4.83% = Q483
The employer share (~12.67%) is a company cost; it is not deducted from your net pay.
Step 3: estimate ISR
A common dependency-employment workflow:
- Build annual income
- Subtract personal exemption (Q48,000) and annual IGSS
- Apply brackets (5% / 7% on taxable income)
- Divide annual ISR by 12
Lower salaries may land at Q0 ISR after exemption + IGSS. Higher salaries need a real annual projection—not a single-month guess.
Step 4: net ≈ gross − IGSS − ISR
Net ≈ Gross − employee IGSS − monthly ISR
Example (illustrative only):
| Gross | IGSS | ISR (approx.) | Net (approx.) | |---|---|---|---| | Q5,000 | Q241.50 | Q0 | ~Q4,758 | | Q10,000 | Q483 | depends on annualization | below Q9,517 | | Q15,000 | Q724.50 | higher | lower share kept |
Always re-run with your extras: overtime, commissions, bonuses.
Benefits that are not monthly net
- Aguinaldo and Bono 14 are separate annual benefits
- They improve total compensation but usually are not part of the biweekly deposit

Compare annual cash:
Annual cash ≈ (net × 12) + aguinaldo + Bono 14 + other guaranteed cash
A lower gross with stronger benefits can beat a higher headline salary.
