Florida overtime 2026: $18 × 48 hours pays $936, not $864

Florida follows the federal FLSA weekly-40 rule, not California daily overtime. At $18/hour, 48 hours = $936 (8 hours at $27). The same 48 hours as four 12-hour days in California pay $1,008.

Florida does not add a daily overtime statute on top of the Fair Labor Standards Act. For a non-exempt hourly job, overtime starts after 40 hours in one workweek. How those hours sat on Monday versus Thursday does not change the federal math.

At $18/hour and 48 hours:

  • Straight 40 × $18 = $720
  • Overtime 8 × $27 = $216
  • Week = $936
  • Straight 48 × $18 would have been $864. The extra $72 is the time-and-a-half.

That is the live FLSA overtime calculator.

The same 48 hours as four 12-hour days in California pay $1,008, because Labor Code § 510 also looks at each day. Florida does not.

Gross wages, not take-home

Both overtime tools stop at weekly gross. They do not withhold FIT or FICA. Overtime dollars are still wages. Employee FICA (6.2% up to the $184,500 2026 Social Security wage base, plus 1.45% Medicare) applies the same way as on straight time (Topic 751). This page does not invent a Florida income-tax rate.

Direct answer: $18 × 48 → $936

  1. Hours over 40 = 8
  2. Overtime rate = $18 × 1.5 = $27
  3. Regular pay = 40 × $18 = $720
  4. Overtime pay = 8 × $27 = $216
  5. Weekly total = $936
FLSA weekly-40 (29 U.S.C. § 207(a)(1))

overtime hours = max(0, hours in the workweek − 40)

weekly total = (straight hours × rate) + (OT hours × 1.5 × rate)

The California gap is $72 above Florida on that clustered week (32 straight + 16 at 1.5×). Run it on the California overtime calculator. Four 12-hour days at $20 are the older CA vs FLSA note.

What Florida still is not

  • A daily 8-hour trigger. Six 8-hour days are still 48 hours, so Florida still pays the same $936. The extra eight hours are weekly, not daily.
  • A salaried exemption test. Being paid a salary does not by itself turn overtime off. That is a classification question, not this engine.
  • Two jobs added together. Each employer counts only its own hours.

Salary vs hourly at a different rate: $25 × 50 hours → $1,375.

Not under the federal FLSA tool this site ships. Florida does not overlay California's 8 / 12 / seventh-day statute. Confirm your contract and any local rule. This page is weekly-40 only.

Because 8 hours sit over 40. Those hours pay $27, not $18. 8 × $9 extra = $72.

California pays $1,008 at $18. Florida still pays $936. The difference is the daily statute, not a tax.
